Study urges state to invest more in early childhood education programsBy Canan Tasci/Pasadena Star News
The final report in the RAND Corporation's series on California's preschool system confirms that early childhood education is a critical part of K-12 reform. The study released today by the nonprofit research organization also shows how California can invest in a high-quality early learning system to help close the state's achievement gap. "Closing California's achievement gap begins with ensuring all of our children start kindergarten well prepared to learn," State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell said. "High-quality preschool provides the foundation for children to succeed in school and in our increasingly competitive global economy." Earlier findings from the report suggest that improving and expanding preschool programs can better prepare children for school and help close the academic achievement gap faced by many children by the second and third grades - primarily black and Latino children, as well as those from socioeconomically-disadvantaged families.
